Enfield Enigma – Explore Nepal by Bike

This adventure is a motorcyclist’s dream… a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Riding atop legendary Royal Enfield motorcycles that ooze style and class, you’ll see corners of Nepal most people never dream of. You’ll experience world-class comfort and get down-and-dirty while making your way through, along, up and over incredible terrain atop your very own Royal Enfield. As one of the world’s oldest motorcycles, originally produced in England in the early 1900s, they’re still made in India today and maintain their trademark setup: back brake on the left foot, opposite gears (1-up, 4-down), one cylinder thump, and clutch on the right-hand, truly challenging!

With the Himalayas as your backdrop you’ll see the greater Kathmandu Valley before heading out into the country with a full team (mechanic, support vehicle and motorcycle leader). This adventure is a motorcyclist’s dream – a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Saddle-up for a uniquely Nepali adventure and hang on for an incredible ride!

Our Smiling Albino host will be waiting for you at the airport upon arrival and guide you through the initial culture shock of Kathmandu’s narrow, winding streets and introduce you to your incredible digs at the award-winning Dwarika’s Hotel. Tonight we’ll hit the town for a traditional Newari dinner (Newars are the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley) and talk motorbikes. Our Enfield Road Captain will fill us in on the quirky elements of these neat bikes we’ll start riding tomorrow.

This is the day we’ve been waiting for! In the morning we’ll leave the hotel in a van which will take us to the edge of Kathmandu (out of the totally manic traffic) where our bikes will be waiting for us. For the next 65 kilometres we ride on one of the nicest little mountain roads you could ever imagine, giving you a chance to get used to your steed. It will take a little while getting used to the Enfield and the road conditions in Nepal but we don’t have a long day ahead of us, so don’t fret, just enjoy riding your own classic in the Himalayas and getting the hang of it. Our target today is the small town of Trisuli, from where we have 5 km up to the old fortress town of Nuwakot. Here we check into our charming little hotel, The Old Farmhouse and enjoy a well-deserved shower and a cold beers!

Today is a big day when riding in Nepal coming in at 140 km. While this might not sound like a lot you’ll find we’ll average about 30 km/h some days during the trip, so we have a few hours in the saddle today. We’ll ride along the Trisuli and Marshyangdi River valleys, passing charming country villages along the way. Throw in 17 km of dirt road, a stretch along the Kathmandu-Pokhara Highway and a final 12 km windy climb up to the mountain hamlet of Bandipur and the Gaun Ghar Lodge and you have a terrific day. And if the weather’s clear we’ll start seeing the Annapurna mountain range in the distance too.

A pleasant 65 km morning ride brings us to the vacation town of Pokhara where we’ll take lunch by the lake at one of Smiling Albino’s favourite restaurants. You’ll hang your hat at the Fishtail Lodge, situated next to Phewa Lake with spectacular views of Machhapuchhare (the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain) and three of the world’s 8,000m peaks, Daulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna. If the weather’s clear we might go for another little ride up to Sarangkot, a view point outside Pokhara with sunset views of the Annapurna massif in the background.

Note: non-cyclists can enjoy the day via ridealong support vehicle

This morning is yours to enjoy with a plethora of options: explore Pokhara town, try paragliding, go fishing, boating, trekking, bird watching, golfing or curl up in a comfy chair and soak up views of the lake and snowcapped mountains. In the afternoon we’ll head out on the lake in canoes and hike up to the International Peace Pagoda for great views of the area. Tonight it’s drinks at the local Enfielder’s Club before heading out to one of Pokhara’s best restaurants for dinner.

It’s on to true mountain roads as we wind our way up and over a couple small mountain passes, drop back down in to valleys and finish by arriving at Tansen, a beautiful old town set right below Srinagar Hill. There’s plenty to see around town, so once we’ve checked in to Hotel Srinagar we’ll head out for a walk around the old town, check things out and enjoy a top-notch dinner of the local favourites.

Today’s ride is a big one as we make our way along one of the most beautiful paved roads in the country towards Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. Before reaching our final destination we have a few hours of challenging riding on dirt roads, passing through Tamghas towards Sandikharkha and leave behind the Nepal that most tourists see. A final 100 km push on paved roads takes us to Lumbini and our home for the night at the Buddha Maya Gardens.

This morning we’ll wander around the sacred garden where Buddha was born and check out some exotic monasteries from many different Buddhist countries. We then hit the road to Chitwan, some 200 km away and enjoy something we haven’t had much of until now – long fast stretches of road. We’ll arrive in Chitwan before sunset and settle in at the bar for some nice drinks overlooking the river with views of the Himalayas from afar if the weather is clear. Sapana Village Lodge provides a great environment to soak in nature and the nearby national park.

This is a day never to be forgotten – a full day of safari action including, jungle walks, bird-watching, Landrover drives, river safaris, elephant camp visits, wildlife viewing and photographing from machans (blinds). All wildlife activities are escorted by an experienced naturalist who will astound you with knowledge of all things big and small. Wildlife in Chitwan National Park includes the greater one-horned rhinoceros, spotted deer, hog deer, sambar deer, barking deer as well as a wide variety of birdlife. With a bit of luck, there is even the chance of glimpsing a leopard, sloth bear and Royal Bengal tiger.

We get a bit of everything with today’s ride, starting along the flat Terai heading west before turning north and beginning a long climb up to the Kathmandu Valley. The first car that came to Kathmandu was carried in over the mountains from here – you won’t believe it when you see the hill in front of you! From here it’s up, up, up on a combination of paved and dirt roads featuring thrilling hairpins, spectacular views and a final dizzying ride through Kathmandu itself back to Dwarika’s Hotel and a well deserved shower. In the evening we head out for a celebratory dinner at one of Kathmandu’s finest restaurants.
